16/9/2015 0 Comments LUTINO HAS ARRIVED...Well initially although the Lutino intrigued the Genetic freak in me I thought we would be a fair way down the line before we thought about a Lutino Netherland Program... But as often happens fate played a hand and the world of the Lutino opened its door to us...and we just had to step through! For those unfamiliar with Lutino.. this gene is a pink eyed dilution gene .. its very similar or possibly identical to the pink eyed dilute gene in mice (not yet proven one way or the other).. this means that all black is stripped from a rabbits coat and the resulting color is I guess what you would call a halfway point between Full Color and Red Eyed White.. the unique character of this gene is the eye that becomes diluted almost but not quite to red eye.. some pigment is returned which gives it this gorgeous lilacy-pink hue... This gene first appeared naturally mutated in a litter of Harlequin Netherland Dwarfs in yup the Netherlands back in 1985 - some breeders took them on as a project and the Lutino breed was born.. in Europe this is a stockier.. slightly larger/weightier breed than the Nethie with ears approaching 3" So of course when they appeared in the UK they were perfect for crossing to Rex and Nethies to integrate the gene.. there are now several Lutino Projects in progress within the Rex - Lop and Nethie communities - and I was very lucky to acquire one of the very few (if not the only one) lines that also have the Satin gene... So our foundation pair have quarantined well and the doe is now ready for mating.. the buck is still a couple of months to be of working age.. Our Doe: a Satin Lutino - possibly a black tort or fawn base (and here in lies the difficulty with this breed when all black is stripped out LOL) This is her at 4.5 mths of age... she appeared a Satin Dove (black self) in this photo... And here she is 6 weeks later - moulting into her adult coat... she weighs 2.7lb so a good foundation brood doe The buck is just 4 mths old and appears to be retaining this shade so far so for now he is labeled as a Dove Lutino (black self) carrying Satin.. he weighs a smidge over 2lb but that type definitely a work in progress! So now we wait with huge impatience to see what our first F1 litters produce :)
